This week’s topic was all about design culture. I think that where we come from has a huge influence on our design. firstly, even the house you grow up in affects your style and interests and core beliefs. All of us are products of our environment we grow up in. Eileen Gray’s father was a painter, his creative interest had an impact her interests and style of design. That is an example of the household you come from affecting your design and style.
I grew up on the border of Carlow and Wexford, I had friends from both areas and I easily noticed a clear difference in the style of clothing people wore. Style of clothing is basically designing how you dress and present yourself to the world. The different areas of both places were clearly influenced by the people around them.
The house, the village, the county and especially the country we come from decides the people we hang around with. People create culture. Design provides the nourishment essential for the maintenance of culture and growth of culture.
It is important to understand cultures when designing a product that will interact with a country. If a business is hoping to expand, it is vital to consider the people you are designing for. Each country has different opinions on different things. For instance, cows in Ireland and most countries are sent to slaughterhouses, but in India they are worshipped.
Revolut marketed billboards in Ireland implying Ireland was in the UK. This is a huge fail In marketing design considering the history of Ireland.
Trends must start somewhere. It's hard to know exactly how a trend starts, I suppose there is numerous ways.
Sometimes it might begin because of people’s want for something. Once there is a demand for something, that 'something' will begin to reappear. If there is a need, there is a possibility a trend will begin. After all necessity is the mother of all inventions.
There can be rebellious trends, that go against the grain of normal thinking. Sometimes designers might have an idea, and this idea will catch on. other designers will attempt to do various alterations on this design and trend can begin. (originate?, 2020)
Tradition effects contemporary design culture and especially effects the design process. Contemporary design culture refers to the society of people who design in modern times. With the new available technology, we have, we have countless opportunities. Technology drives trends, it allows us to do things we could never do before. People are naturally curious and want to explore the new.
However, even though we can now 3D print models, we can sketch with stylus and touchpad screens we still choose to sketch with pen and paper and make models with ours hands. Tradition effects the now.
Every country has its own unique style due to culture, and designers designing with similar contributing factors to their country such as technological advancements, national identity, aesthetic sensitivities and external influences.
